Syrië en de onzekere toekomst

De familie-Assad is sinds 1971 aan de macht in Syrië, maar het wordt steeds moeilijker voor de Syrische regering.

 Onder aanvoering van de Verenigde Staten legt het Westen het Syrische regime het vuur aan de schenen. De moord op de Libanese oud-premier Rafiq Hariri, waarvoor de Duitse onderzoeker Detlev Mehlis namens de Verenigde Naties Syrische topleiders vorige maand medeverantwoordelijk heeft gesteld is de directe aanleiding hiervan, maar zeker niet de enige. De conservatieve haviken in Washington ruiken bloed; zij willen na het Irakese Baath-regime ook dit regime van de seculiere, socialistische Ba’ath kwijt. De regio zal een stuk veiliger worden zonder de Baath-partij.

Hafez al-Assad, die in 1971 president van Syrië werd, was een sluwe vos die zijn kaarten behendig uitspeelde, gebruikmakend van de internationale constellatie. Hij was een brute dictator zoals zijn geestverwant Saddam Hussein.

Terwijl Saddam de wereld op zijn grondvesten liet schudden door zijn oorlogen steunde Assad Iran en Kuweit. Maar na deze oorlogen volgde Bashar Assad zijn vader op na diens overlijden in 2000. De hoogtijdagen van de dictators waren intussen voorbij en er werden politieke hervormingen van hem verwacht. Maar na een korte periode van liberalisering werden de oude onderdrukkingsmethoden weer opgepakt. Tot de dag van vandaag weet niemand zeker of Bashar Assad gewoon een Arabische despoot is of een willoos werktuig in handen van de oude Baath-vrienden van zijn vader die nog in de Syrische top zitten.

Momenteel is Syrië een politiestaat en geen rechtsstaat zoals we die in Nederland kennen. De mensenrechten zijn erg slecht en martelingen zijn aan de orde van de dag. Degenen die dit willen veranderen wordt de mond gesnoerd of naar de gevangenis gestuurd en gemarteld. Ook geldt de doodstraf nog in Syrië en zit er een groot aantal mensen vast in gevangenissen zonder een eerlijk proces.

De situatie is dus intern zeer slecht en van buitenaf is er een te grote internationale druk. Dit heeft als gevolg dat de jonge president het bijna niet meer aan kan en weinig oplossingen meer heeft.

Maar van ander kant kan je ook de vraag stellen wie het land gaat besturen na de heerschappij van de Baathpartij en de familie Assad? De Arabische positie is te zwak door haar naïeve standpunt tegen over buitenlandse acties en de Amerikaanse druk. Tot nu toe is de moslimoppositie (het moslimbroederschap) niet welkom in Amerika. Dus ligt er een groot probleem bij de Arabische oppositie in Syrië.

De Koerdische oppositie daarentegen is de enige goed georganiseerde oppositiepartij in Syrië. Maar hun doelen zijn niet duidelijk: Willen ze Syrië besturen, of willen ze binnen de andere delen van Koerdistan (Iraaks-,Turks- en Iraans-Koerdistan) een eigen staat hebben.

Ik geloof dat er nu een groot probleem is voor Amerika. Want ze hebben tot nu toe geen eigen Karzai voor Syrië. (De Afghaanse president). Als er wel zo’n sterke leider zou zijn van de oppositie, hadden we sinds begin 2005 nu een andere situatie gehad in Syrië.
